Television was the last frontier conquered by the Marx Brothers, individually and, occasionally, collectively. We all know about the success that Groucho had as the host of You Bet Your Life, not to mention Harpo’s famous appearance with Lucille Ball on I Love Lucy. But there is a host of other television appearances that the Marx Brothers made throughout the 1950s and 1960s that haven’t been seen in years, including Groucho’s
appearances on The Jack Benny Show and The Dick Cavett Show; Harpo’s starring role in “A Silent Panic,” an episode of The DuPont Show considered by many to be his finest performance ever; “The Hold Out,” the episode of GE Theater (featuring a young Dennis Hopper) that marked Groucho’s only dramatic appearance on television; “The Musicale,” the episode of Mr. Smith Goes to Washington that turned out to be Harpo’s final TV appearance; and Chico’s short-lived series, The College Bowl, a weekly musical revue featuring a young Andy Williams.

These titles and more are part of The Marx Brothers TV Collection, an excellent DVD box set that also includes such extra features as rare color home movies (with music and narration by Harpo’s son Bill Marx), outtakes from You Bet Your Life and the rarely seen British version of You Bet Your Life. An accomplished musician, arranger and composer in his own right, Bill Marx is also the executive producer of The Marx Brothers TV Collection. He will talk about the legacy of The Marx Brothers when he joins us in our second hour.

Speaking of The Golden Age of Television, we will also remember some of the iconic actresses of the 1950s, ’60s and ’70s as we welcome back Herbie J Pilato. Herbie’s latest book, Glamour, Gidgets and The Girl Next Door, celebrates the accomplishments of more than four dozen TV actresses who shattered expectations, one way or another, while paving the way for successive generations. Herbie’s book features interviews with such living legends as Barbara Hale, Nichelle Nichols, Kathy Garver, Donna Douglas, Elinor Donahue, Mary McDonough and Adrienne Barbeau. Herbie J Pilato will join us in our first hour.

For our listeners in Southern California, Herbie J Pilato will be appearing at the Barnes and Noble at 731 N. San Fernando Blvd. in Burbank, CA on Thursday, Oct. 23 at 7pm.
