Everyone knows Vicki Lawrence from the many characters she played every week on The Carol Burnett Show (the venerable CBS variety series that Time magazine named one of the 100 Best Television Shows of All Time), not the least of which is Thelma Harper, the irascible matriarch of the “Family” sketches on The Carol Burnett Show that eventually led to Vicki’s own long-running series, Mama’s Family. Vicki will share some memories of her years on the Burnett show when she joins us in our first hour.

Speaking of which, PBS will premiere a brand new special later this week, Carol Burnett’s Favorite Sketches, featuring twelve of the best and funniest moments from The Carol Burnett Show (all hand-picked by Carol herself), plus new introductions filmed by the comedienne just for this special. Carol Burnett’s Favorite Sketches premieres Friday, June 3 on your local PBS station; click here for more information.

Also joining us this week will be James Zeruk, moderator of the Hollywood Book Chat group on Facebook, and the author of Peg Entwistle and The Hollywood Sign Suicide, a fascinating biography about the actress who has been inextricably linked to Hollywood history because of her fatal fall from the Hollywoodland sign on September 16, 1932. Entwistle was just twenty-four years old at the time of her death, a fact that has contributed to the many myths that have portrayed her as a failed actress who was victimized by Hollywood. In truth, Peg was an accomplished stage performer who had starred on Broadway, worked steadily in various theatrical repertory companies throughout the U.S., and had just completed a well received stage production in Los Angeles that brought her to the attention of RKO and other movie studios.

By all accounts, Peg Entwistle had a lot to live for―and yet the fact remains that she took her life at so young an age. We’ll ask James about that, as well as his thoughts on the eternal fascination with Peg Entwistle in general, when he joins in our second hour.

Also this week: Part 4 of our tribute to Joey Bishop as part of The Sounds of Lost Television.
