Today is Holy Innocents' Day

"That '70s Finale" is the series finale of the long-running sitcom, That '70s Show. The series ran on Fox for eight seasons, and the episode aired on May 18, 2006. The episode also marked the return of Ashton Kutcher and Topher Grace who had left the series.

It is December 31, 1979, the final day of the 1970s and the gang is getting ready to part ways so they want to spend the best moments together, so the decade can end with a bang.

Today is Saint John the Evangelist's Day

Rudolph has just come back from delivering Christmas presents with Santa Claus when he is asked by Father Time to find the missing Baby New Year before midnight on New Year's Eve. The baby, named Happy, ran away because everyone laughed at his large ears, although no one meant it in a cruel way. Unless Happy is returned before December 31 to take his position as the new year, the current year will not end and the date will perpetually remain December 31 forever. If this happens, the evil buzzard named Aeon will rule the world forever.

We’ll celebrate the holidays with an expanded edition of This Week in TV History that will look back at the career of singer Perry Como, a man who for many of us is as synonymous with Christmas as Andy Williams and Bing Crosby. Then, Phil Gries will get you ready for 2014 in our second hour with a special edition of The Sounds of Lost Television that remembers bandleader Guy Lombardo, the man whose New Year’s Eve celebrations were a tradition on radio and television for nearly five decades.

Also this week: Greg Ehrbar catches up with actors Lenny Venito and Simon Templeman, two of the stars of The Neighbors, the “science fiction sitcom” on ABC that, in many respects, is a throwback to the family-friendly comedy series that many of us remember. The Neighbors returns with a new episode on Friday, January 10. Lenny and Simon will give us an idea of what lies ahead when they join us in our first hour.

White Christmas, written by the formidable composer and lyricist Irving Berlin receives its world premiere on this day in 1941 on Bing Crosby's weekly NBC radio program, The Kraft Music Hall. It went on to become one of the most commercially successful singles of all time, and the top-selling single ever until being surpassed by Elton John's Candle in the Wind 1997.

December 24, 1948

Perry Como Show debuts.

Perry Como launches his long-running TV variety show. At first, the show was simply a TV broadcast of Como's musical-variety radio program and lasted just 15 minutes. Gradually, though, the program grew into its new medium. The show grew to a half-hour, then a full hour in 1955. The show ran until 1963.

Como was born in 1912 in Canonsburg, Pennsylvania. As a teenager, he worked as a barber but began touring with bands as a young man. By the 1940s, he was releasing a string of hit recordings, starting with "Long Ago and Far Away" in 1944. Between 1940 and 1955, he was second only to Bing Crosby in the number of hits released-including 42 Top 10 hits by 1958. Among his chart-toppers were "Prisoner of Love," "Surrender," and "Chi-Baba, Chi-Baba."

The classic Dr. Seuss Christmas story combined with the animation of Chuck Jones. Horror icon Boris Karloff supplies the voice of the Grinch, who plans on spitefully ruining Christmas for the town of Whoville by stealing all the presents. Watched regularly every holiday season and beloved by children and cynical adults alike, this animated gem is just that and more. The story is from the book by Dr. Seuss. Thurl Ravenscroft (of "Tony the Tiger" breakfast commercial fame) provides the memorable bass singing voice for the tune "You're a Mean One, Mister Grinch."
