Known to fans of daytime television as Liz Chandler, the wealthy heiress she played on Days of Our Lives throughout the 1980s, Gloria Loring has also enjoyed a successful career as a singer, songwriter, and author, including “Friends and Lovers,” her duet with Carl Anderson that became a No. 1 record in 1986; co-writing the lyrics to the theme songs for the classic TV series Diff’rent Strokes and The Facts of Life (the latter of which she also sang, from the second season on); and such CDs as Turn the Page. But like all of us, Gloria has had to overcome pain and struggle throughout her life, including the illness of her son, her father’s alcoholism, the divorce of her parents, and the end of her own marriage to actor/writer Alan Thicke. Gloria says that she overcame her struggles with the help of coincidence — not “coincidence” in the random sense of the word, but rather a particular form of coincidence that combines scientific observation, spiritual wisdom, and what Gloria calls EBL, or Evidence Based Living.

Gloria’s efforts to understanding the meaning of coincidence in her life, and in all our lives, is the focus of Coincidence is God’s Way of Remaining Anonymous: Reflections on Day..., an engaging look at the spiritual dimensions of coincidence: where it comes from, how we attract it, and how we can use it for our benefit and the benefit of those around us. We’ll talk about Gloria’s journey, and more, when she joins us in our second hour.

Also this week: We’ll go back to the night of March 19, 1953, the first time that the Academy Awards were broadcast on television, as part of an expanded edition of This Week in TV History. Though the Oscar ceremony is now one of the biggest nights of the TV season, it didn’t start out that way — in fact, the very idea of televising the Academy Awards came about by accident. We’ll talk about this, as well as look at how the Oscarcast has changed over the years, when Tony Figueroa and Donna Allen join us during our first hour. Plus: Greg Ehrbar with a new DVD report.
