This week’s program will include a tribute to Stanford Whitmore, the novelist and longtime television writer who wrote for such diverse shows as Johnny Staccato, Night Gallery, McCloud and, most notably, The Fugitive, as well as numerous made-for-TV movies. In many respects, Stanford Whitmore was the unsung hero of The Fugitive, in that while Roy Huggins created the series and Quinn Martin produced it, it was Whitmore took Roy’s concept and really fleshed it out. Stan not only wrote the pilot episode of The Fugitive, “Fear in a Desert City,” he established the character of the One-Armed Man as well as wrote the episode “The Girl from Little Egypt,” the show that depicted the back story of Dr. Richard Kimble.
Stanford Whitmore passed away on Thursday, May 8. I spoke to him many times in the course of writing my book The Fugitive Recaptured, and he was very proud of the pivotal role he played behind the scenes in the development of that series. We’ll play audio highlights from one of my conversations with Stan as part of our second hour.
And speaking of unsung heroes, Greg Ehrbar will join us as we rememberJimmy Johnson, a man who not only devoted his entire career to the Disney organization, but innovated many changes in merchandising, publishing and direct marketing that helped stabilize the Walt Disney Company during its formative years, while also overseeing the creation of Walt Disney Records, an offshoot of Disney that continues to play a critical role in the company’s financial success. Johnson died in 1975, but before his death he completed a manuscript called Inside the Whimsy Works, a memoir of his life with Walt Disney Productions that has just now been published, with the help of Greg Ehrbar. We’ll talk about the life and career of Jimmy Johnson when Greg joins us in our first hour.
Also this week: Author James Rosin remembers his friend Ruby Dee, while Tony Figueroa and Donna Allen remember film critic Roger Ebert (born during This Week in TV History). It’s a full program as always, and we certainly hope you’ll join us.
