This Week in Television History: December 2012 PART II

Listen to me on TV CONFIDENTIAL:

CLICK HERE for a list of Stations

As always, the further we go back in Hollywood history, the more that fact and legend become intertwined. It's hard to say where the truth really lies.

December 14, 1969

Frosty the Snowman first aired on CBS.

The show, based on thepopular song of the same title, was produced for television by Rankin/Bass and featured the voices of comedians Jimmy Durante as narrator and Jackie Vernon as the title character. This special marked the first use of traditional cel animation for Rankin/Bass. Arthur Rankin, Jr. and Jules Bass wanted to give the show and its characters the look of a Christmas card, so Paul Coker, Jr., a greeting card and MAD Magazine artist, was hired to do the character and background drawings. The actual animation work was done in Japan, by Osamu Tezuka's studio, Mushi Production. Rankin/Bass veteran writer Romeo Muller adapted and expanded the story for television as he had done with Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer in 1964.

To quote the Bicentennial Minute, "And that's the way it was".

Larry Hagman was one of the few actors fortunate enough to catch lightning in a bottle twice, so to speak, with starring roles in two iconic television series: Major Anthony Nelson, the reluctant master of the genial Jeannie on I Dream of Jeannie, and oilman J.R. Ewing, the amoral wheeler-dealer who brought such joy to backstabbing family and friends alike every week on Dallas.
Larry Hagman passed away on Friday, Nov. 23 at the age of 81. We will devote both hours of this week’s program paying tribute to the actor who, in many ways, has been a part of our lives for more than six decades.

Bill Daily will join us in our first hour. Best known, of course, for playing Roger Healey on I Dream of Jeannie (as well as Howard Borden as The Bob Newhart Show), Bill will share some memories of working alongside Barbara Eden, Larry Hagman and series creator Sidney Sheldon.

Then Michael Preece will join us in our second hour. Michael not only directed more episodes of the original Dallas than any director, but had a hand in just about every major cliffhanger of Dallas, going back to Who Shot J.R.? Michael will talk about his friendship with Hagman on and off the set of Dallas.

And while most of us remember Larry Hagman as either Major Nelson or J.R., he also starred in two comedy series that each ran briefly in the early 1970s (after Jeannie, but before Dallas). With that in mind, Bob Leszczak will also join us in our first hour. Bob is the author of Single Season Sitcoms, 1948-1979: A Complete Guide, a new book that goes behind the scenes of notable series from the first three decades that, for one reason or another, only ran for one season or less. Among the shows Bob discusses in his book are Hagman’s series The Good Life, which aired on NBC in the fall of 1971, and Here We Go Again, which aired on ABC during the spring of 1973.

All that, plus a look at some of Hagman’s other notable film and TV work, including his reprisal of J.R. Ewing on the new Dallas; how both Jeannie and Dallas impacted our culture in their own particular ways; and a few other surprises. It’ll be a full program as always — and if you’re a fan of Larry Hagman, we certainly hope you’ll join us.
