As always, the further we go back in Hollywood history, the more that fact and legend become intertwined. It's hard to say where the truth really lies.

August 15, 1923

Rose Marie, actress and comedian who also had a successful singing career as Baby Rose Marie was born. 

A veteran of vaudeville, Rose Marie's career includes film, theater and television. Her most famous acting role came as television comedy writer Sally Rogers on CBS's classic sitcom The Dick Van Dyke Show. She later portrayed Myrna Gibbons on CBS's classic sitcom The Doris Day Show and she was also a frequent panelist on the game show Hollywood Squares.

To quote the Bicentennial Minute, "And that's the way it was".

Love Boat R.I.P.

TV’s original “Love Boat.” has made a final voyage to a scrapyard in Turkey.

Reuters is reporting that the 42-year-old vessel will be dismantled for its metal and parts.
The 19,903-ton, 600-passenger ship has been docked in Genoa, Italy for several years. The vessel last sailed for Spanish-based Quail Cruises after changing hands a couple times since sailing for Princess Cruises from 1975 until 2002.



Built in 1971 for Flagship Cruises as the Sea Venture, the ship was renamed Pacific Princess in 1975 after joining the Princess fleet. It gained worldwide fame over the subsequent decade as the backdrop for ABC's The Love Boat television series, which aired from 1977 to 1986.

Cruise industry executives often credit the top-rated show for igniting a multi-year boom in cruise bookings. A new Pacific Princess joined the Princess fleet in 2002 and continues to sail for the line. The original Pacific Princess' name was changed to Pacific after it left the Princess fleet.

Karen Black - Trilogy of Terror

Karen Black died today in Los Angeles from ampullary cancer at age 74.

When I first heard the sad news my mind went to Trilogy of Terror a three-part made-for-television horror film, first aired as an ABC Movie of the Week on March 4, 1975. 

 

Amelia was filmed as a one woman play, with Karen Black as the only actor. It was also the only film of three to be adapted by its author, Richard Matheson, who based Amelia on his short story, Prey.

I then quickly remembered that Donna and I did an episode of the web series The Tell-Tale Zone "The Crazy Doll". At the end, Donna pays tribute to Karen Black in Amelia.

Michelle Danner will join us in our first hour. Founder and Artistic Director of the Edgemar Center of the Arts in Santa Monica, Michelle is also one of the most successful acting coaches in Hollywood, having worked with such A-list actors as Jason Alexander (Seinfeld), Chris Rock, Marcia Cross (Desperate Housewives), Seth MacFarlane (Family Guy) and Norman Reedus (The Walking Dead).

Norman Reedus, in fact, is one of the stars of Hello Herman, a feature motion picture directed by Michelle Danner about a troubled teenager who goes on a shooting rage that mirrors the tragedies of Columbine High School and Sandy Hook Elementary School. Also joining us this week will be Barbara Van Orden. After beginning her career as a fashion editor for Vogue magazine, Barbara became one of the top print models in the country, gracing the covers of many leading magazines and appearing in many television commercials, before establishing herself as a nightclub performer in such venues as the Playboy Clubs and the legendary Persian Room in New York City. Barbara’s career, however, came to halt when she was struck by a motorist in 1982, an accident that left her with compound fractures in both of her legs. It would take 18 surgeries and many years of therapy before Barbara could walk again.

Though Barbara recovered from her injuries to lead a successful, multifaceted career in the entertainment industry, including a new cabaret show that she performs across the country. But because it took 27 years of battling the workers compensation system before she received her court-ordered, rightfully entitled benefits, Barbara continues to speak out for reform of the Workers Compensation laws on behalf on those who are less fortunate. We’ll talk about that, as well as her work alongside such legends as Milton Berle, Don Rickles, Buddy Hackett, Soupy Sales, Morey Amsterdam and Frank Sinatra when Barbara Van Orden joins in our second hour.
