We will take a serious look at comedy as we welcome longtime television writer and producer David Misch. David began his career in show business for writing for such TV series as Mork and Mindy, Police Squad!, Saturday Night Live and Late Night with David Letterman; he also written and/or produced shows for every major broadcast and cable network, including the award-winning animated series Duckman.

David is the author of FUNNY: THE BOOK: Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Comedy, an entertaining look at the art of comedy from every conceivable angle: historical, musical, psychological, philosophical and everything in between. David’s book also explores comedy from the worlds of movies, television and stand-up, including the impact of such iconic comedians as Buster Keaton, Groucho Marx, Richard Pryor, Steve Martin, Robin Williams and Woody Allen, as well as answers the eternal question “Why are fart jokes funny?” We’ll learn the answer to that, a whole lot more, when David Misch joins us in our second hour.

David Misch will be presenting A Brief History of Timing: A Comedy Chronicle at the Skirball Cultural Center, 2701 N. Sepulveda Blvd. in Los Angeles on Sunday, June 24 beginning at 2pm. Tickets are free, but reservations are recommended. Call (877) 722-4849. David will also be appearing at Book Soup, 8818 Sunset Blvd. in West Hollywood on Thursday, July 26 beginning at 7pm. For more information, go to the Author Events page at BookSoup.com.

Also this week, we will take you back to the early 1960s and the golden age of AM radio as we welcome our guest Rich Podolsky. Rich is the author of called DON KIRSCHNER: The Man with the Golden Ear, a new biography about the music impresario that also tells the story of Aldon Music, the song publishing co-founded by Kirschner and Al Nevins that was not only responsible for some of the biggest hits in music history (including “On Broadway,” “Will You Love Me Tomorrow,” “The Locomotion,” “Up on a Roof,” “One Fine Day,” “Go Away Little Girl,” “You Lost That Lovin Feeling,” “Splish Splash” and “Dream Lover”), but also developed some of the greatest and most prolific songwriters and performers the music industry has ever known, including Bobby Darin, Neil Diamond, Connie Francis, Tony Orlando, Gerry Goffin, Neil Sedaka, Howard Greenfield, Barry Mann, Jack Keller and Carole King.

Don Kirschner also left his mark on television: he developed The Monkees and created The Archies in the 1960s before bringing rock n roll to late night television in the 1970s with Don Kirschner’s Rock Concert. We will talk about the legacy of Don Kirschner, not to mention the stories behind so many of these great songs, when Rich Podolsky joins us in our first hour.

Rich Podolksy will be appearing at Book Soup, 8818 Sunset Blvd. in West Hollywood on Sunday, July 22 beginning at 4pm. For more information, go to the Author Events page at BookSoup.com.
