In a career that spanned more than four decades, Bob Elliott and Ray Goulding left their mark radio, television and, eventually, Broadway, creating a host of characters (including Linda Lovely, Mary McGoon, Wally Ballou and The Slow Talker) that mocked the world of broadcasting, while never playing to the crowd. Along the way they also influenced three generations of comedians and comedy writers, including Bob Newhart, Woody Allen, Jack Burns, George Carlin, Harry Shearer and David Letterman.

There is no question that Bob and Ray were two very funny people — and yet they resisted being called comedians, and they never considered themselves “an act.” Those are just two of the many interesting revelations you’ll find in Bob and Ray: Keener Than Most Persons, The Backstayge Story of Bob Elliott and Ray Goulding, a comprehensive dual biography by David Pollock that was not only written with the complete cooperation of Bob Elliott and Liz Goulding, Ray’s widow, but features insights and commentary from numerous friends, colleagues, family members and admirers of Bob and Ray, including Norman Lear, Carl Reiner, Stan Freberg, Harry Shearer, Audrey Meadows, Cloris Leachman and Chris Elliott.

David himself has deep roots in comedy. He and his writing partner Elias Davis have written material for Jack Benny’s nightclub act, as well as written for such comedy and variety series as M*A*S*H, Cheers, Frasier, The Steve Allen Show, The Carol Burnett Show, The Mary Tyler Moore Show and Goodnight, Beantown. We’ll talk about Bob and Ray when David Pollock joins us in our second hour.

David Pollock will also join Tony Figueroa and Donna Allen during our first hour as we pay tribute to Emmy Award-winning actress Jean Stapleton, and particularly the many nuances of her portrayal of Edith Bunker on All in the Family. David wrote for Jean Stapleton not only on All in the Family, but also her short-lived series with Whoopi Goldberg, Bagdad Café.
