The first African-American hired as a director for NBC television (where he worked on such shows asRowan and Martin’s Laugh-In and The Andy Williams Show), Michael St. John has also worked as a stage and film actor in such films as Carmen Jones, the first major Hollywood motion picture featuring an all African-American cast. Michael’s book, Hollywood Through the Back Door, is filled with great stories about his work with such legends as Pearl Bailey, Dorothy Dandridge, Mary Pickford, Bette Davis, Dan Dailey, Lou Gossett, Brock Peters, Harry Belafonte, and Otto Preminger — how they opened doors for him, and how he, in turn, paid it forward by creating opportunities for others.

Michael will not only share some of those stories, but update us on the pre-production of his play, I Feel Sin Comin’ On, which is based on early events in his life that are depicted in Hollywood Through the Back Door. He’ll also provide a few memories of his friend and colleague, Laugh-In announcer Gary Owens. Michael St. John will join us in our second hour.

Also this week: Tony Figueroa and Donna Allen with an expanded edition of This Week in TV History that includes a look at the origins of The Andy Griffith Show.
