If you watch daytime television, you know Eric Braeden as Victor Newman, the complex self-made billionaire that he has played continuously on The Young and the Restless since he first joined the series in 1980. If you don’t watch daytime television, you probably know Eric as Captain Diedrich on the classic TV series The Rat Patrol, for his notable roles in such films as Colossus: The Forbin Project, 100 Rifles and Escape from the Planet of the Apes, or for the many villains that he played on various popular TV shows in the 1970s, including memorable appearances on Gunsmoke, Hawaii Five-O, Kolchak: The Night Stalker, The Mary Tyler Moore Show, and just about every crime drama produced by Quinn Martin.

What you may not know about Eric Braeden that his life story is a classic immigration story that embodies the American Dream. Born and raised in Germany at the height of World War II, Eric arrived in America in 1959 unaware of the atrocities of the Holocaust. That changed dramatically one day in 1961, when he watched the film Mein Kampf—an experience that not only awakened him politically, but left him determined to redress the wrongs of his homeland and to fighting prejudice not only against Germans, but all ethnicities.

Eric speaks about this candidly, and very movingly, in his memoir, I’ll Be Damned: How My Young and Restless Life Led Me to America’s .... Eric Braeden will join us in our second hour.

Also joining us this week will be Arlene Larsen, award-winning costume designer and the wife of Milt Larsen, founder of the world famous Magic Castle in Hollywood. Arlene will talk about a Larsen family heirloom—a rare and historic emerald and ruby encrusted crown that Czar Nicholas of Russia originally gave to legendary illusionist Harry Houdini in 1903—that will soon become the property of the highest bidder at the upcoming Houdini Auction, which will take place at the auction house of Potter & Potter in Chicago on Saturday, April 8. Proceeds from the winning bid will help fund the creation of the Magic Castle Cabaret, a smaller version of The Magic Castle that will be located in Santa Barbara. We’ll ask Arlene how the Larsen family came to own the Houdini Brooch, as well as the Larsen family’s personal connection with Harry and Bess Houdini, the legacy of Houdini himself, and the various film and TV actors who have played Houdini over the years. Arlene Larsen will join us in our first hour.

If you can’t make the Houdini Auction in person on April 8, you still can bid on the Houdini Brooch (or any other item) either online, by telephone, or as an absentee bidder. For more information on how to do that, go to PotterAuctions.com/auctions/buying. For more information on The Magic Castle, go to MagicCastle.com.
