If you watch Justified, you know Raymond J. Barry as Arlo Givens, the reprobate father of Deputy U.S. Marshal Raylan Givens (played by Timothy Olyphant). But Ray’s career outside of Justified includes seventy motion pictures, including Born on the Fourth of July, Dead Man Walking, Charlie Valentine, The Ref, Cool Runnings, Flubber, Steel City and Year of the Assassin, plus appearances in such popular TV series as L.A. Law, The X Files, Law and Order, CSI, Cold Case, Alias and, most recently, New Girl with Zooey Deschanel.
Raymond J. Barry is also an accomplished playwright; as a matter of fact, he is working on a new stage production, while his book, Mother’s Son and Other Plays, was recently published. We’ll ask Ray about playing Arlo on Justified, as well as how his work as a writer helps him focus in his craft as an actor, painter and sculptor, when he joins us in our second hour.
Tony Figueroa and Donna Allen will join us in our first hour as we continue paying tribute to Television’s Original Genius, Ernie Kovacs, along with our guest Josh Mills. The son of singer/actress Edie Adams and photographer Marty Mills, Josh is the owner of Ediad Productions, the company originally founded by Edie Adams to manage the licensing of the work of Kovacs and to ensure that Ernie is given his due as a comedian and innovator. Josh is also one of the executive producers of the excellent Ernie Kovacs box set DVD collection recently released by Shout! Factory.
We’ll talk about some of our favorite Kovacs moments; the relationship between Ernie and Edie, on and off camera; the lengths that Edie took to preserve Ernie’s legacy, including purchasing back the videotapes of Ernie’s shows from ABC; and how Edie herself was a pioneer in archiving TV history.
