Kathleen Sharp will join us for a look at the life and legacy of Hollywood’s original power couple, Lew and Edie Wasserman, who together ruled over the entertainment industry for more than six decades — first by building MCA, the world's largest talent agency, then buying a broken-down film studio along with some real estate and transforming it all into the multi-billion-dollar global conglomerate known as Universal Studios. Under Lew Wasserman’s rule, Universal created such staples as the made for TV movie, the “wheel” format of revolving weekly series, and the blockbuster feature motion picture, while Edie Wasserman extended their influence into governors' mansions, Senate chambers, the White House, international boardrooms and the world of old Las Vegas. But while Lew Wasserman ran Universal Studios, he and Edie were far from universally liked — in fact, on more than one occasion their rivals and enemies joined forces to bring the Wassermans down. It’s all part of a fascinating look into the inner workings of twentieth-century show business that Kathleen captures in her book Mr. and Mrs. Hollywood: Edie and Lew Wasserman and Their Entertainm..., which we’ll talk about during our second hour.
2013 marks the 100th anniversary of the birth of Lew Wasserman. To mark the occasion, AudioGo.com has re-released Mr. and Mrs. Hollywood both as an eBook, and soon as an audiobook. In addition, Kathleen Sharp will be appearing at The Pasadena Festival for Women Authors, March 8-9 at the Pasadena Senior Center, 85 E. Holly Street in Pasadena, CA.
Also joining us this week will be actor/director Chris Robinson. If you follow daytime television, you know Chris as Dr. Rick Webber on General Hospital (which Chris will be returning to, later this month), and as Jack Hamilton on The Bold and the Beautiful. If you watch Me TV these days, you know that Chris played Sgt. Sandy Komansky on Twelve O’Clock High, while also guest-starring in many other series produced by Quinn Martin, including The Fugitive, The New Breed, Dan August, The F.B.I., Cannon, The Streets of San Francisco, Barnaby Jones and Caribe. In addition, Chris has appeared in such films as The Birdman of Alcatraz, The Young Savages (both with Burt Lancaster), The Hawaiians (with Charlton Heston), and Sweet, Sweet Rachel, the pilot for The Sixth Sense.
Chris has also starred in many film and TV Westerns, including episodes of Gunsmoke, The Virginian, Wagon Train, and Zane Grey Theater, as well as the upcoming independent film The Forsaken, which Chris says offers a new take on the classic genre that is also very insightful. We’ll talk about that, and more, when Chris Robinson joins us during our first hour.
