Michael St. John was the first African-American man hired as a director for NBC television in Burbank in the 1960s, where he worked on such shows as Laugh-In and The Andy Williams Show, while he also directed news programs for Burbank affiliate KNBC featuring Tom Brokaw and Bryant Gumbel. As an actor, Michael has appeared in such films as Carmen Jones, the first major Hollywood motion picture featuring an all African-American cast, plus he has covered entertainment news for various media venues, including The Canyon News, EZ Way magazine and San Francisco radio station KDIA. His book, Hollywood Through the Back Door, is the story of Michael’s journey to Hollywood in the 1950s (at a time when racism was still rampant in the film industry), and the help and guidance he received from such legends as Bette Davis, Mary Pickford, Marian Anderson, Katharine Hepburn, Gary Owens, Marilyn Horne and Ethel Waters.
Michael will join us during our second hour for a roundtable discussion that will include his thoughts on the ongoing controversy regarding diversity in Hollywood. We’ll also discuss the latest developments on Hollywood Through the Back Door, which is currently being adapted for both the stage and as a miniseries for HBO.
Our first hour will include new editions of This Week in TV History and Greg Ehrbar’s DVD report. It’s a full program as always… we certainly hope you’ll join us.
