First hour: Ed welcomes June Lockhart (Lassie, Petticoat Junction, Lost in Space), one of television’s most durable actresses, and a recent recipient of NASA’s Exceptional Public Achievement Medal for inspiring the public about space exploration. June will be one of the presenters for the Creative Arts Emmy Awards on Friday, June 20. Also in this hour: Tony Figueroa and Donna Allen look back at June 17, 1994, the night of the famous low-speed white Bronco police chase that captivated television audiences, and how TV news coverage of the O.J. Simpson murder case continues to impact us today. 

Second hour: Ed welcomes actor/comedian Bill Daily (I Dream of Jeannie, The Bob Newhart Show). Bill is featured “Group Therapy,” a roundtable discussion also featuring Bob Newhart, Peter Bonerz and Jack Riley that was produced by Shout! Factory as part of The Bob Newhart Show: Complete Series Box Set Edition.

As always, the further we go back in Hollywood history, the more that fact and legend become intertwined. It's hard to say where the truth really lies.

June 25, 2009

Farrah Fawcett died at approximately 9:28 a.m. on June 25, 2009, in the intensive care unit of Saint John's Health Center in Santa Monica, California. She was 62 years old.

A private funeral was held in Los Angeles on June 30, 2009 for Fawcett. Her son Redmond was permitted to leave his California detention center to attend his mother's funeral, where he gave the first reading. She is buried at the Westwood Village Memorial Park in Los Angeles,

News of the death was significantly overshadowed by the death of pop culture icon Michael Jackson who died later on the same day. News coverage was heavily focused on Jackson's death, leading to significantly less coverage focused on that of Fawcett.

June 25, 2009

“King of Pop” Michael Jackson dies at age 50 after suffering from cardiac arrest caused by a fatal combination of drugs given to him by his personal doctor. 

Jackson, who after a lengthy time away from the public spotlight was preparing for a series of summer concerts in London, was discovered unconscious in his Los Angeles mansion. The Los Angeles coroner’s officer later ruled the pop star’s death a homicide after lethal levels of the powerful sedative propofol, as well other drugs, were found in his system. Jackson’s personal physician, who was at the singer’s home when he died, had been giving him propofol as a sleep aid for a period of weeks.

On July 7, 2009, more than 20,000 fans attended a public memorial for Jackson at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. Over 30 million viewers tuned in watch the event on cable TV, while millions more viewed it online.

 

To quote the Bicentennial Minute, "And that's the way it was".
