We will say Happy Birthday to Ida Lupino this week (her birthday was Feb. 4) as we welcome back author Mary Ann Anderson. Mary was the conservator for Ida Lupino during the last eleven years of Ida’s life, and became one of Ida’s closest friends as a result. Mary’s books include Ida Lupino: Beyond the Camera, the story of Ida’s life and career (told almost entirely in Ida’s own words) and The Making of The Hitch-Hiker Illustrated, a behind-the-scenes look at the classic 1953 thriller directed by Ida Lupino that was not only the first American example of film noir that was directed by a woman, but a groundbreaking film in many other ways that can still be felt today.

Ida Lupino, of course, was among the first women to establish herself as a writer, producer and director at a time when the motion picture industry was still predominantly male-driven. We will not only talk about Ida’s impact on film and television, we will actually hear from her herself ― by way of excerpts from a 1983 interview (one of the last recorded interviews that Ida gave) in which Ida discusses her film and television career. All this, and more, when Mary Ann Anderson joins us in our first hour.

Also joining us this week will be author and longtime entertainment journalist Sylvia Resnick. Sylvia began her career writing for such publications as Photoplay, Modern Screen and TV Radio Mirror before becoming a staff editor for Rona Barrett’s Hollywood. She has also written several books, including biographies of Burt Reynolds and Kristy McNichol, and The Walton Family Cookbook, which was recently re-released by Bear Manor Media. Sylvia has a lot of great stories about Old and New Hollywood, a few of which she’ll share with us this week.

Plus: With Jay Leno preparing to leave The Tonight Show this week, we will play excerpts from a 1989 interview that Jay gave to radio host Sam Yates (shortly after Jay was named permanent guest host of The Tonight Show) in which he discusses his early career in stand-up and his influences as a comedian.
