Marty is the writer, director and star of Least Among Saints, a compassionate look at the effects of posttraumatic stress disorder that will open in select theaters on Friday, Oct. 12, with a wide release to follow on Friday, Oct. 19. Also in this hour: Tony Figueroa and Donna Allen remember the birth of Bernie Mac and the premiere of Leave It to Beaver, both of which originally occurred This Week in TV History. Second hour: Ed welcomes composer, scientist and psychotherapist Elide Beltram, author of The Memory of Vinegar and Oil, a lyrical journey of self that weaves in themes of science and music. Also in this hour: Phil Gries with Part 2 of the Sounds of Lost Television's special tribute to Jack Paar, featuring audio from programs that depict Paar's legendary disputes with Mickey Rooney, Ed Sullivan and Walter Winchell.

Phil Gries will join us in our first hour as we replay our special tribute to Johnny Carson as part of the Sounds of Lost Television. Phil will be playing highlights from Johnny’s first ten years as host of The Tonight Show, including audio from Johnny’s debut broadcast of Oct. 1, 1962, as well as the first appearance of Carnac the Magnificent. Most of the tapes from the first decade of the Tonight Show broadcasts were erased by NBC, so this is a rare opportunity to hear the King of Late Night in his early days.

Johnny Carson will be the subject of a two-hour edition of American Masters, Johnny Carson: King of Late Night, that will premiere on Monday, May 14 on PBS. Some of the audio that you’ll hear on that program is courtesy of Phil Gries.

Then, in our second hour, we’ll replay our conversation with Paul Green, Dan Farren and Tony Figueroa about American adaptations of British TV series: those that succeeded, such as The Office, All in the Family and Three’s Company, and those that failed, including the American versions of Fawlty Towers, Couplings and Absolutely Fabulous. We’ll compare and contrast the British approach to episodic television, versus the American approach.

Your Mental Sorbet: More from the Late Night Talk Show War II

Here is another "Mental Sorbet" that we could use to momentarily forget about those things that leave a bad taste in our mouths.

Because of my associations and affiliations I am connected and affected our new Late night talk show war so I outsourced the job of breaking down the situation to China.

Back home in Hollywood my friends at POParitaville braved the raincovered to cover the Team Coco Rally last Monday.

It is a good thing that they didn't make the Conan rally a Tea Party. The L.A. River would be filled with Coco.
